What is Baby Sleep Coaching and How Does it Work?
You have probably heard the term sleep coaching thrown around in parenting groups, on podcasts and across social media. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly, is it the same as sleep training?
Let me clear that up right now because the two are very different things.
Sleep coaching vs sleep training - what is the difference?
Sleep training tends to refer to specific methods designed to teach a baby to fall asleep independently, some of which involve leaving a baby to cry for periods of time.
Sleep coaching is something broader and more holistic. A sleep coach does not just hand you a method and send you on your way. They look at the whole picture: your baby, your family, your lifestyle, your parenting values and work with you to find an approach that fits. They support you through the process, adjust the plan as things change and are there when things do not go to plan.
Think of the difference between being handed a diet sheet and having a personal nutritionist in your corner. One gives you information. The other gives you support, accountability and a plan that actually works for your life.
What does baby sleep coaching actually involve?
Good baby sleep coaching starts long before any plan is put in place. Here is what the process typically looks like:
A thorough assessment Before anything else, a good sleep coach will want to understand your baby and your family properly. This usually involves a detailed questionnaire covering your baby's current sleep patterns, feeding, routine, sleep environment, development and your own parenting approach and goals.
A one to one consultation This is where you get to talk everything through properly. A good sleep coach will listen far more than they talk in this session. They will ask questions, dig into the detail and really get to know what is going on before making any recommendations.
A bespoke sleep plan Based on everything they have learned about your baby and your family, your sleep coach will put together a personalised plan. This is not a template. It is a plan written specifically for your little one that takes into account everything that makes your baby and your family unique.
Ongoing support This is the part that makes the biggest difference. Sleep coaching is not a one off event. It is an ongoing process and having someone to check in with, ask questions and lean on when things get hard is what separates a plan that works from one that falls apart after three days.
Adjustments along the way Babies are not robots. Things change, regressions happen, illness strikes. A good sleep coach will adjust your plan as needed rather than leaving you to figure it out alone when things do not go perfectly.
Who is baby sleep coaching for?
Sleep coaching works for babies and toddlers of all ages and at all stages. It is particularly helpful for:
Families who have tried various things and nothing has worked long term.
Parents who want a personalised approach rather than a generic method.
Families who need ongoing support rather than a one off consultation.
Parents who want someone to help them understand the why behind everything rather than just following instructions blindly.
Anyone who is exhausted, overwhelmed and just needs someone knowledgeable in their corner.
What makes a good sleep coach?
Not all sleep coaches are created equal. When choosing a sleep coach it is worth looking for someone who has a recognised qualification in sleep consultancy, has real hands on experience working with babies and young children, takes a genuinely personalised approach rather than a one size fits all method, is transparent about their approach and does not promise overnight miracles, and makes you feel heard, supported and confident rather than judged or overwhelmed.
How I can help:
I am Lottie, a Norland nanny with 10 years experience, 17 years working with babies and children altogether, and OCN qualified through the Sleep Consultant Academy. I founded Bedtime and Beyond because I genuinely believe that every family deserves sleep support that feels kind, personalised and completely tailored to their reality.
I offer two levels of sleep coaching support depending on where you are and what you need right now:
The Sleep MOT
Sometimes you do not need a full sleep programme. Sometimes you just need an expert in your corner for an hour to talk through what is going on and walk away with clear, practical answers. That is exactly what the Sleep MOT is here for.
This is a relaxed, one to one Zoom call where you can talk to me openly about whatever is going on with your little one's sleep. Whether you are navigating a tricky nap transition, struggling with dummy removal, going through a sleep regression, moving your baby into their own room, welcoming a new sibling or looking for breastfeeding guidance, I am here to help you work through it.
In 60 minutes together I will listen to what is going on, ask the right questions and give you clear, honest, practical solutions you can start using straight away. No waffle, no overwhelm, just straightforward baby sleep coaching tailored to your child and your family.
The Sleep MOT is perfect for nap transitions, dummy removal, sleep regressions, moving to their own room, new sibling transitions, breastfeeding guidance and any other sleep wobble you need help with. For babies and toddlers from birth to 4 years old.
And if after our call you feel your little one needs a bit more support, you can book onto Night Night by Zoom and receive £50 off the package price. Consider it a head start on the journey to better sleep.
