Why a Personalised Baby Sleep Plan Makes All the Difference

Here is something I hear from almost every family I work with.

They have tried the generic sleep advice. They have read the books, followed the Instagram accounts, downloaded the free guides and attempted the methods recommended by well meaning friends and family members. And nothing has worked. Or it worked for a few days and then fell apart completely.

And the reason is almost always the same. Generic advice is written for a generic baby. And your baby is not generic. Your baby is completely unique.

What is a personalised baby sleep plan?

A personalised baby sleep plan is exactly what it sounds like. A sleep plan written specifically for your baby, your family and your life. Not a template. Not something that has been copied and pasted from another family's plan with the names changed. A proper, bespoke document that takes into account everything that makes your baby and your situation unique.

That means your baby's age, temperament and developmental stage. Your feeding approach, whether that is breastfeeding, bottle feeding or combination feeding. Your parenting values and what you are and are not comfortable with. Your family's daily routine, your work schedule, your other children. Your home setup and your baby's sleep environment. What you have already tried and why it did or did not work.

All of that goes into building a plan that actually fits your real life rather than an idealised version of it.

Why does personalisation matter so much?

Because sleep is not one size fits all. What works brilliantly for one baby can be completely wrong for another, even babies of the same age with similar sleep challenges.

A breastfed baby has different needs to a formula fed baby. A highly sensitive baby needs a very different approach to a laid back, easy going baby. A family with a toddler and a newborn has completely different constraints to a family with a single child. A mum who is back at work full time needs a different kind of support to one who is at home.

A good personalised baby sleep plan takes all of this into account and builds something that is not just effective but actually sustainable for your specific family.

What does a personalised baby sleep plan include?

Every plan I write is different because every family is different. But a good personalised baby sleep plan will typically include:

A clear explanation of what is currently going on with your baby's sleep and why. An age appropriate nap schedule tailored to your baby's specific needs. A step by step bedtime routine that works for your family's lifestyle. A gentle, gradual approach to any sleep associations that need addressing. Clear guidance on what to do when things do not go to plan, because they sometimes will not. Age appropriate wake windows and total sleep targets to aim for. Feeding guidance where relevant. Environmental recommendations tailored to your specific home setup.

And crucially, it will be written in plain, friendly language that actually makes sense at 3am when you are desperately trying to remember what to do.

How I create your personalised baby sleep plan

Before I write a single word of your plan, I want to really understand your baby and your family. That starts with a detailed pre consultation questionnaire that covers everything from your baby's current sleep patterns and feeding to your parenting approach, your daily routine and your goals.

Then we have a one to one Zoom consultation where we talk everything through properly. I listen far more than I talk in this session because the more I understand about your specific situation, the better your plan is going to be.

Only once I feel I really know your baby and your family do I sit down and write your personalised baby sleep plan. And even then it is not set in stone. As we work together over the following two to three weeks, the plan evolves and adjusts based on how your baby responds and what is actually working for your family.

How I can help

I am Lottie, a Norland nanny with 10 years experience, 17 years working with babies and children altogether and OCN qualified through the Sleep Consultant Academy. Every single family I work with receives a completely bespoke personalised baby sleep plan as part of my Night Night by Zoom package, along with daily WhatsApp support and follow up calls over two to three weeks.

Because a plan is only as good as the support that comes with it. And I am in your corner every single step of the way.

If you are exhausted from trying generic advice that was never written with your baby in mind, a personalised baby sleep plan could be exactly what your family needs. Every baby deserves a plan that was written just for them. And every parent deserves the support to make it work.
