What is a Night Nanny and Do You Actually Need One?
It is 3am. The baby is awake again. And somewhere between the exhaustion and the desperation you find yourself Googling "night nanny Gloucestershire" wondering if this is actually a thing and whether you can justify it.
It is absolutely a thing. And here is everything you need to know.
So what actually is a night nanny?
A night nanny, sometimes called a night nurse, is a qualified childcare professional who comes to your home overnight to care for your baby while you sleep. They typically work from around 9pm to 7am, handling all night feeds, settling and nappy changes so that you can get a proper stretch of uninterrupted sleep.
For many families, particularly in those brutal early weeks with a newborn, a night nanny can feel like an absolute lifeline.
What does a night nanny actually do?
Every night nanny works slightly differently, but typically you can expect them to:
Handle all night feeds, whether that is bottle feeding, bringing baby to you for a breastfeed and resettling afterwards, or formula feeding throughout the night. Settle your baby back to sleep after feeds using gentle, safe techniques. Change nappies throughout the night. Keep a log of feeds, nappy changes and sleep so you have a clear picture of how the night went. Offer reassurance and guidance to new parents who are finding their feet. Begin to gently introduce good sleep habits and routines from the very beginning.
What qualifications should a night nanny have?
This is really important. Anyone can call themselves a night nanny, so it is worth knowing what to look for. Ideally you want someone who holds a formal childcare qualification, has experience working with newborns and young babies, has a current paediatric first aid certificate, and is DBS checked.
A Norland nanny or Norland Maternity Practitioner brings an exceptionally high level of training to this role. Norland College in Bath is widely regarded as the gold standard in childcare education, and that training covers everything from newborn care and feeding to sleep, development and family support.
How much does a night nanny cost?
Night nanny rates in the UK vary depending on experience and location, but you can typically expect to pay anywhere from £150 to £250 per night for a qualified professional. The date per night is higher if a Norland Night Nanny. For many families this is not a sustainable long term solution, particularly beyond the newborn stage.
So what if a night nanny is not the right fit for your family?
Maybe the cost is not workable right now. Maybe your baby is past the newborn stage and you need a different kind of support. Maybe you do not want someone in your home overnight but you still desperately need help with sleep.
This is exactly where a baby sleep consultant comes in.
Rather than being physically present overnight, a sleep consultant works with you to understand what is going on with your baby's sleep and puts together a gentle, personalised plan to help the whole family sleep better, without the overnight price tag.
